Which Cloud Storage to use for your WordPress backup using Updraft Plugin

Choosing a backup sollution for your wordpress site is essential. Google drive is 15gb free and has an option for 1.99$ for 100GB

Google Drive Gets A Big Price Drop, 100GB Now Costs $1.99 A Month

Dropbox only has 7gb free and  starts at 1TB for 9.99$ It depends how much you need but I would recommend google as it was reasonably quick to setup. It took me less than 1 hour.

After you get a storage sollution like google drive,  then link the google drive account to active and setup the UpdraftPlus plugin for wordpress backup.

Some Google webmaster tools:

Webmaster verification: (to verify you own the domain easiest is to upload a verification file into your home directory)

https://www.google.com/webmasters/verification/

Webmaster Tools:

https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/

API check

https://cloud.google.com/console

After this we can start to link the wordpress plugin to

  • You need to create an API at google and fill in the url provided from the settings page of your updraft plugin on your wordpress page

https://console.developers.google.com/apis

  • Then you setup the API details on the settings of the Updraft plus plugin on your wordpress page, filling in the url and key
  • Then you need to register and verify your domain with google
  • Then you need to joing a risky app group as a security measure from google:

https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/risky-access-by-unreviewed-apps

  • Then you only can link and verify that the Updraft plugin can use your google account and drive. You do this on your wordpress page under the updraft plugin settings and click save. You will be asked to click on a google link which takes you to your email sign in. Choose your account or fill in your gmail username and password and your Updraft plugin is now linked to your google drive and backup of your wordpress site should be up and running.
  • Once you are done with the OAuth approval page and able to test you app, we recommend you should “Leave this group“. Go to https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/risky-access-by-unreviewed-apps and click on my settings to leave the group
  • You must enable the google drive API: https://console.developers.google.com/apis/api/drive.googleapis.com/
  • You are done. The wordpress backup plugin Updraft should now be backing up to your google drive

Increase WordPress File Upload Limit

To increase the upload limit on wordpress, create a text file with notepad, with this content:
memory_limit = 100M
upload_max_filesize = 192M
post_max_size = 100M
file_uploads = On
Name the file PHP.ini and save as “all files (*.*)” from dropdown , (not as text documents *.txt!)
Then upload this file to the “wp-admin” folder with your FTP program. Change the limit if you like later by increasing the file size

Ultimate Category Excluder

How To Hide or Remove Categories from a WordPress Homepage

When displaying your latest posts on the homepage, you might want to exclude some categories from displaying on this page.

There are many reasons why you would want to do this. You might want to keep your homepage for only news posts and relegate the rest of the posts to other sections accessed through the menu.

In any case, what we will need to modify is the WordPress loop. All WordPress themes make use of the loop, and the best way to modify it is by using the pre_get_posts hook.

Removing categories from the homepage can sometimes turn out to be quite a frustrating act for beginners, so here’s the easy way to do it.

In your theme’s functions.php file, just insert the following code, replacing the category IDs with the ones you want to exclude:

If you’re not familiar with how to obtain the caetgory IDs, I recorded a short clip showing you how you can easily get the IDs for the categories you want to exclude:

Remove Categories from Homepage via PluginsIf you’re absolutely not comfortable with editing your theme’s files, there are also some plugin alternatives you can use.

Simply Exclude

simply exclude categories in wordpress

The Simply Exclude plugin works on the simple logic of the WordPress WP_Query object. This object is created and contains all the information needed to handle a page request from the user’s browser. So when the user points the browser to your site’s home page the WP_Query object is setup to query all the posts to display for your home page.

The Simply Exclude plugin adds a simply filter to this WP_Query object. Depending on the Simply Exclude settings for Home, Search, Archive, Feed and is Posts, Pages, Categories are being displayed.
